Marisol Zero One is a first of its kind in a series of four zero-carbon homes on the California Coast. Located in Malibu this home was built to green certification guidelines for the International Living Future Institute (ILFI) ZCC. The home was originally designed with a total of 80,000 pounds of steel in its structure. Our challenge was to replace that with sustainable timber framing. Our design was driven by the client's wishes to reduce the carbon footprint and use sustainable construction materials and practices. In addition to FSC certified timber, we were able to specify recycled steel and maximized the use of fly ash in the concrete mix design. All of these measures contributed to this not only being a sustainable home but an architecturally beautiful structure.
